Work, Work, Work and more Uni WORK!!!

So my 1st placement is now officially over, back to uni on Monday and I have 2 things that I have to have completed by the following Monday, the 1st is my career mapping essay, 800 words, I really thought I would have done it by now by I was so busy on placement getting my skills and domains for that completed that I just didn't have the time. So now and trying to get it sorted, plus the 2nd things I have to get done which is due on the same day is the research for the 20 minute presentation that we have to do in groups of 4. I have hardly done any work on that either, but I am thanking the fact that they are both formative and so not marked, I will still put the effort in but wont worry as much as if they were summative.

So this weekend will be all about staying in and doing uni work to get a bit more up to date, I have shipped my daughter off to her grandparents for the night so I wont get distracted and the other half is in the bedroom watching sport so I prob wont even see him at all today.

I shall forget about a social life for the time being.

Details for 2nd placement

Well i have just found out where i will be going on my 2nd placement at the beginning of February

Here is the details:

Planned Investigation and Treatment Unit (PITU)
PITU is a 20 bedded medical ward with 5 infusion chairs. Development of this facility supported by the dedicated staff that run it, represents a major achievement in delivering high quality care for scleroderma cases at the Royal Free. This unit supports a large number of medical specialities such as Rheumatology, Cardiology and others. All our patient bookings are managed by 2 ward administrators who are responsible for all our bed bookings. Patients are able to contact them Monday-Friday 0900- 1700hrs with regard to their booking and treatments and are able to speak to nursing staff and the Rheumatology team if required. The ward is open Monday- Thursday 24hrs and then closed on a Friday at 2000hrs. Patients come in from home and the majority are independent and self caring. Length of stay will vary according to why they are admitted and it can be from a few hours to 5 continuous.

We arrange investigations, infusions or procedures of which will all be assessed by our Rheumatology team. We are closely connected to the Clinical Nurses Specialists in order to maintain a high level of knowledge and education through their teaching and training on the ward.

Approximately 8-10 scleroderma patients a week come to us for routine iloprost infusions and whilst an inpatient we routinely have cardiac echos, lung function, bloods and renal function assessed. Some patients can go home after a 6 hour infusion; some stay in hospital for the whole duration. All nursing staff on the ward are experienced nurses in Rheumatology specialist diseases and are competent in giving and managing iloprost infusions.

So busy, it's been so long

Well, I have been so busy i just have not had the time to do another post for ages. Working 5 days a week whilst trying to be a mother and have a social life and do all my uni work and learn about stuff to do with my placement and get the domains and skills completed in my practice document that have to be done on placement is HARD WORK. I am a busy beaver.

This placement has been great, there have been a fair few things that have happened that i wont forget and stuff that has happened that I will learn from, there have been incidents happening and at times when the alarm had been needed to be pulled, I have had my own set of patients daily that I have to look after and write notes on. I have made beds, served food, tidied up, given medication, learnt about different mental health disorders, learnt about how medications can affect people and how illegal drugs can really affect some people causing their disorder to become so much worse. There have been many highs and lows. I have had a problem with a staff member who was crossing the lines of personal space and boundaries with me and where I had to deal with it, not nice and has taught me a valuable lesson of what to do when these type of situations arise in the future.

I finish my placement here next Friday and then am back at uni, I am already going to sign on with the nurse bank to get a little work to earn some extra money as Christmas has taken every penny and I need to pay bills. But I will take away a huge amount of important knowledge and am now looking forward to what my next mental health placement is going to be.

I will try and update my blog more regularly, sorry about the long wait.
